A company that started out 20 years ago to help workers enroll in their benefits programs online says collecting and leveraging data on millions of Americans is now a core part of its business.

Daniel Island-based Benefitfocus Inc., which releases its quarterly and year-end financial results Tuesday, created a software platform where employees can buy and manage their health insurance and other job perks.
